No Previous Experience Required!

No experience is needed for the Level 1 course. The subsequent Levels 2 and 3 require a pass in the previous course. We also offer short taster sessions which can be booked here.

We occasionally take mature 14- and 15-year-olds on these courses, however for safeguarding reasons they should attend with a friend or adult known to them. Please contact carlo@rlymyc.org.uk to discuss. Those aged 8 to 15 can also be booked onto the RYA Youth Stage courses here.

Key Information

Course Content

Level 1 'Start Sailing'
An introduction for those new to the sport. This course gives you a basic understanding of dinghy sailing. We recommend this course is followed up with the Level 2 course.

Level 2 'Basic Skills'
Once sailors complete this course, they will be able to sail in light winds without an instructor on board. Your sailing will be more refined, and you will develop your background knowledge. We will also do some capsize drills in a controlled manor.

Level 3 'Better Sailing'
This is an improver course designed as a steppingstone between Level 2 and the advanced modules- therefore a great confidence builder! As well as polishing your basic skills, you will get a chance to try different boats and have an introduction to one of the advanced modules.

Example Programme

The below programme is an indication of how your course may be structured - please be aware that this is an example only and many factors may influence this including weather and candidate progress.

Assessment & Course Outcomes

This course is continually assessed and the candidate is required to meet a minimum standard to successfully complete it.

We always strive to do everything we can to help a candidate pass, but sometimes this is not possible. In the event the standard is not reached, candidates will be issued with an 'action plan', detailing what needs to actioned in order for the candidate to receive a certificate. Additional training may come at an additional cost. Sometimes we can offer an alternative qualification.

What Makes Our Training So Great?

"Olli was a brilliant instructor. Personable and patient he taught the course in simple, easy to understand language. He assessed his pupils quickly to deliver the course with the right balance of professionalism and fun that we were clearly looking for."
"We wanted to thank the instructors for teaching us about powerboats this weekend. We felt we learnt a great deal, although as with all things, the more you know the more you realise there is to learn! We both enjoyed it enormously and are looking forward to practising...maybe when the weather is a little warmer!"
"I have completed the PB2 course and I would just like to pass on my thanks to the instructors who ran a very professional and informative course. All of the instructors were calm, reassuring and patient and I would certainly recommend them to friends!"
"Brilliant day, practiced so much, heaps of thanks given me much more confidence to volunteer when my son sails in the Tera fleet on Saturdays."

Our Equipment

We have a varied fleet of powerboats including RIBs, a launch, tiller steered Rigiflexs, and a Cheetah Marine multihull. Haven Jubilee is our go to boat for most powerboat courses. She was launched by our patron, HRH The Princess Royal, in 2022 and is fitted with depth sounder and electronic navigation aids.

We have a fleet of over 55 sailing dinghies: from Optimists and Hartley10s to RS Fevas and Topaz Argos - with many classes in between! We invest in our fleet, maintaining our boats to a high standard. We also can't wait to welcome a fleet of RS Zests in early 2024!

Our Facilities

Our clubhouse sits right on the waters edge- it is possible to walk out the classroom door and be on the water in seconds! We have a large pontoon where we store most of our sailing dinghies, with an innovative floating slipway to launch them without having to get wet. It also provides a great space to tie boats up to for lunch limiting the amount of times you have to pull them up the slipway!

Our Sailing Area

We have access to some of the best sailing areas on the South Coast. The sheltered lakes provide a great space to take to the water for the first time and the Western Solent provides a more challenging area for those looking to push themselves.

Our Instructors

Our instructors provide a friendly welcome and bring a wealth of experience to the club. We really couldn't do it without them!
