Joint Cruise with RLymYC and SCC 7th -14th July 2023
Introduction
Following an approach by the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake (SCC) to the RYA in 1976, the Royal Lymington was put in touch with members of the SCC for what was termed a “no-hard-feelings” joint cruise to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the War of Independence.
These relationships were rekindled in 2015, when Royal Lymington members went to the Chesapeake and were hosted by members of the SCC, before SCC members were hosted here in the Solent in 2017. A further return of Royal Lymington members to the Chesapeake took place in 2019 for an amazing trip around the Chesapeake, which was much enjoyed by all Lymington members, who were lavishly entertained by members of the SCC for a fascinating cruise around the northern part of Chesapeake Bay.
Proposed Joint Cruise 7th to 15th July 2023
After an interval of 6 years due to Covid, the proposal is that the Royal Lymington will now host members from the SCC who will travel to Lymington and will be hosted on individual members boats for a one-week flotilla or cruise round the Solent starting on Saturday the 8th of July next year and returning to Lymington on Friday July 14th.
The Route and Events
The draft proposal for the Joint Cruise, will involve stops at Bucklers Hard, Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth, Itchenor, Seaview, the Hamble, Cowes, and or Yarmouth and a return to Lymington for a reception at the Club.
While staying in these individual ports, social events will take place including barbecues, dinners and visits to historic sites.
Those taking part will hopefully have the opportunity to take part in the follow up exchange trip in two- or three-years’ time, when the club will hope to return to the Chesapeake and be entertained by SCC members on their boats for a similar flotilla around the Chesapeake.
The Organising Committee would encourage members to consider hosting a likeminded couple from the US on their boats for this lively cruise around the Solent. Trip will include visits to interesting harbours and with arranged visits to historic sites and social events. Boats don’t have to be large or luxurious, so all boat-owning members are encouraged to come forward to hosts our guests and demonstrate our commitment to furthering this unique relationship.
